    George Pelecanos(Author)

A brand-new collection of stories from one of America's hottest crime writers.

A collection of stories, mostly gritty low-level crime stories set on Washington DC's mean streets. THE MARTINI SHOT itself is set in the world of TV, featuring a scriptwriter on a popular cop show. When a member of the crew is murdered, the screenwriter decides to track down the perpetrators himself, to see if as a writer he can do more than just talk the talk.

Even if you didn't know that Pelecanos is a hotshot screenwriter - his CV includes The Wire, The Pacific and Treme - you would soon guess so as you tore through these tough and slangy tales of drugs and death .... Pelecanos knows how to make every word count. (EVENING STANDARD)For anyone who has somehow missed out on Pelecanos, he is up there with Elmore Leonard and even Chandler (DAILY MAIL)Pelecanos displays a ferocious understanding of street reality and an empathy for America's downtrodden (GUARDIAN)

This is very much in the vein of Richard Price’s “Clockers” which isn’t surprising considering their mutual connection to “The Wire”. These stories make for gritty, violent and almost always compelling reading. The stories are short, tight and lean flexing plenty of muscle and never dull and never outstay their welcome. This is good, solid fiction that never tires of packing a punch!

For short stories very readable but wide of the mark for the Pelecanos finest.

As a fan and having read all his books I was very disappointed in this book. A cobbled together collection of short stories with little plot and some appear to be introductions to future books and books already published. The Martini Shot contained many graphic sex references which were totally unnecessary and unlike any previous book he has written. I am no prude but got the feeling these references were only to add to the pages as they had no relevance to the plot at all. Very poor and I will think carefully before buying another book by Mr Pelecanos
