Twenty eight florins a month is a huge price to pay, for a man to stand between you and the Wild.

Twenty eight florins a month is nowhere near enough when a wyvern's jaws snap shut on your helmet in the hot stink of battle, and the beast starts to rip the head from your shoulders. But if standing and fighting is hard, leading a company of men - or worse, a company of mercenaries - against the smart, deadly creatures of the Wild is even harder.

It takes all the advantages of birth, training, and the luck of the devil to do it.

The Red Knight has all three, he has youth on his side, and he's determined to turn a profit. So when he hires his company out to protect an Abbess and her nunnery, it's just another job. The abby is rich, the nuns are pretty and the monster preying on them is nothing he can't deal with.

Only it's not just a job. It's going to be a war. . .

I found it quite convoluted at first and easy to loose track of who was who, and what was where with who, but the imaginative world and likeable characters wouldn't leave me be and towards the end it all seemed to pull together and get a little slicker and I look forward to the next instalment.

Managed to get through this book and whilst a great story, the book went everywhere yet nowhere! Every individual was introduced, had their own section and whilst it all came together in the end, not my style as too bitty and I couldn't get a "flow" out of it.

Having read a huge number of fantasy, sci-fi and historical fiction over the years I feel that Miles/Christian Cameron is easily up there with the very best. The world takes a while to get to grips with but when you find your feet, the attention to detail, the pace, the wonderful characters and the sheer brilliance of the writing sweep you away.I love everything about this series, especially the fact that Cameron doesn't spoon feed the reader. The world, its lore and the scale of the plot reveals itself as you get deeper into the story and the wait is worth it.I cannot recommend these books highly enough.Go on.Treat yourself

I don't actually LIKE it - too much swearing, blasphemy and gratuitous gore for my delicate psyche. It is a compelling, well constructed yarn though. I ordered the next book in the series before I'd finished this one which tells you something

I rarely review, let alone rave about, books.....but this is very, very good. I've been reading fantasy for thirty years and this is right up there with the best. Astonishingly well written, superb characterisation and enthralling plot. A hugely enjoyable read.

Brilliant book. Picked this up and could not stop reading it, the characters are fantastically portrayed with some good sub plots and a very good ending. Hopefully we shall hear more of the Red Knight.
